It's been reliable for a long LONG time for a reason, if Foundry doesn't work out for you, you can always go back to it. I recommend you test FoundryVTT for suitability, but keep MapTool simmering on the back burner. Honestly, none of the other new platforms are with considering, unless you are willing to sacrifice features to get some niche use filled. but it's severely handicapped with a lack of features. Fantasy Grounds is about half and half community support and half revenue streams.

That day isn't today though, so you're just gong to have to try it, and weigh it out and see if it makes sense to make your third party RPG systems functional under FoundryVTT.Īs an example, Roll20 unabashedly only codes new features to develop new revenue streams. With Foundry's solid community support and a solid foundation under it, FoundryVTT may very well someday surpass the capabilities of even MapTool. I won't say I agree with EVERY decision that they've made in supporting the community, but they are definitely dedicated to it. Foundry's strong point is its commitment to the community. None of that is even Foundry's strong point. Devin Night absolutely has the best top-down tokens. That said, in my opinion, Devin Nights work is far and above the best out there.

(Not that you HAVE To code stuff, of course') Adds a lot to immersion, and easier to track what direction a creature is facing. OBVIOUSLY, if you don't mind coding until your fingers bleed, FoundryVTT is the place to be. However, there is a league of module developers who are committed to keeping a baseline of modules for use up and running while the actual FoundryVTT devs concentrate on the bigger stuff.

Module development is moving at a breakneck pace, and system developers are having a hard time keeping up with core changes while not alienating the mod developers. The developers are at the point where they're jamming on the core so fast, they don't have time to add those little features that probably OUGHT to be part of the core. The next best thing you will find, bar none, is FoundryVTT. Those newer platforms will open things up after they get them up and running. If those custom RPG systems you're playing on have freaky mechanics that require MapTool to make them work, then you're better off sticking with MapTool. Quite frankly, you will not find a more open platform, ANYWHERE.

Those limitations you mention are because it's built on older platforms, that's why the main devs are jamming it in full gear to get it on to newer platforms to support more newer features. You can literally code it to do any RPG feature you want. MapTool is the granddaddy of ALL modern VTT platforms. I can tell you authoritatively, that FoundryVTT will be the closest thing to MapTool that you will find.
